HIKE TO PALCOYO THREE RAINBOW MOUNTAINS

To start the hike to Palcoyo, we pick you up from your hotel around 4:00 to 4:30 a.m. then we’ll travel 02 and 1/2 hours on a minibus to Combapata where we will stop to buy some stuff you ned as water, snacks, etc.

Then, we continue 1 and 1/2 more hours passing by a beautiful landscape of the highland of Cusco, where you will find local people doing their daily life, to arrive in Palco (4700 mts. /15419 ft.) this is the trail head,

from here you can already see 2 of these mountains, then we will start the hiking, first, we walk approximately 40 minutes to arrive at the main viewpoint. 

Once you arrive at the summit (Palcoyo 4900 mts. / 16076 Ft.) you will have free time to rest and to take your pictures, to the different mountains, also you can see a kind of forest of stone

then, we start to go back hiking downhill to arrive again in Palcoyo where our transportation will be waiting for us to take us to have a comforting lunch,

then we will bring you back to Cusco again around 5:00 or 5:30 p.m. (we drop you off one block from the main square for the traffic).

1.- I am just one person, can I join some group tour?

Yes, you can, we have departures every day, feel free to decide when to go.

2.- We don’t like to go in a big group, can we arrange a private tour?

Yes you can, our group tours go with 10 or 15 people, but if you want, you can also arrange a private tour, we have different rates for it depending on how many people you are.

3.- I will travel with my family, we have two 65 people, do you think, can they make it?

We had people on this tour from 50 to 65, the tour has medium to hard difficulty, all depends on how custom they are to walk, the difficulty is more for the altitude, if you think they are not to fit to do it, we recommend taking a Private tour, that will be a perfect plan to do the tour quite easily and smoothly.

5.- How about my luggage, can I take all my staff? if I will check out my room at my hotel?

As the hike to Palcoyo is only for 1 day, we recommend taking only small backpacks because. The rest of your stuff you can be stored at your accommodation in Cusco, All the Hotels have storage if you book the night for your way back, you can leave your stuff there, another option is that you can take with you, in the car, we have small storage, or also you can leave your stuff in our office.

6.- How about the altitude, Are going to pass by other places higher than Cusco?

Cusco city is located at 3350 masl. (10990 Ft.) the Palcoyo rainbow mountain is located at 4900 masl. (16076 Ft.); we always recommend having at least one day in Cusco to acclimatize; altitude sickness is very different for everyone, sometimes you don’t have any problem.

6.- What is the best time of year to hike to Palcoyo?

The best time to hike to Palcoyo is from January to April and from August to September or December to January. But the best month is May, as the weather at this time is more stable, with little chance of rain, which makes the experience more enjoyable and the views clearer.

7.-When does it usually snow in Palcoyo?

The Palcoyo Rainbow mountain range is usually covered with snow in the months of April to July and September to November.

9.- Are there toilets along the hike to Palcoyo?

Along the hike to Palcoyo, there are usually no toilets available. It is important to be prepared for this situation, it is advisable to use the toilet facilities before starting the trek and to take advantage of the opportunities at the starting and finishing points of the trek.
